The Westweg trail winds its way through the charming Markgräflerland region towards its destination in Basel. Along the way lie the wildly romantic Wolfschlucht gorge, magnificent beech forests, small vineyards, and the imposing Rötteln castle ruins. The Westweg descends over the scenic Tüllinger Berg hill to the Wiese river. The trail then leads through surprisingly green landscapes to the Swiss metropolis on the Rhine bend, ending at the Badischer Bahnhof (Baden Railway Station) in Basel.
From Kandern, the Westweg trail initially follows the Kandertal valley. Rocks have broken away from the Kander riverbank, forming the Wolfsschlucht (Wolf's Gorge). Narrow paths lead through tight rock passages and up steep slopes beneath the canopy of mighty beech trees, sometimes ascending, sometimes descending, until reaching Hammerstein. The first vineyards accompany hikers past Egerten to the Baselblick Hut above Wollbach.
