Fairytale gorge and waterfall poolDue to the higher rainfall, deep gorges were formed on the northern side of the Apennines in the Pietra Serena, the horizontally layered sandstone that is still quarried in large quarries today. One of these dusty trenches branches into two remote canyons in the upper reaches, which can be hiked in one go.
Starting point: Badia di Moscheta, 569 m, above Firenzuola.Directions: From Florence to San Piero a Sieve, then towards Firenzuola. Shortly before the village, in the hamlet of Violla, take a sharp right and cross a saddle to Moscheta. Parking in front of the horse farm at the entrance to the small settlement.Train and bus: No bus service.
