Stammerberg
From Stein am Rhein to Stammheim - places worth seeing, quiet forestIf it were up to the language, the Stammerinnen and Stammer (the inhabitants of Oberstammheim and Unterstammheim) would have to belong to Schaffhausen, or at best to Thurgau. In fact, they belong to Zurich, which had placed its outermost lookouts on the heights of the Stammerberg. This hike climbs comfortably from Stein am Rhein to the wooded moraine hill, from where we can see far out into the Hegau and then far across the Thur valley. As we curve down through well-tended woodland to Oberstammheim, we visit the Gallus Chapel with its beautiful medieval frescoes and stroll through the intact Riegelhaus village and along the vineyards to Unterstammheim.
Starting point: Stein am Rhein, railroad station, 414 m. Access - S 8 (Schaffhausen-St. Gallen), S 29 (Winterthur-Stein a. R.), NFB 33 (Singen Htw.-Stein a. R.), NFB 825 (Frauenfeld-Stein a. R.). - Parking in Wagenhausen or for a fee in Stein a. R.End point: Unterstammheim, Adler stop, 433 m, or Unterstammheim station.
