From Stein am Rhein to Stammheim – Places worth seeing, tranquil forest. If language were the deciding factor, the inhabitants of Ober- and Unterstammheim would belong to Schaffhausen, or perhaps Thurgau. In reality, they belong to Zurich, which placed its outermost watchtowers (lookout points) on the heights of the Stammerberg. This hike ascends gently from Stein am Rhein to the wooded moraine hill, from where we can see far into the Hegau region and then far across the Thur Valley. Following a loop through well-maintained forest down to Oberstammheim, we visit the Gallus Chapel with its beautiful medieval frescoes and stroll through the well-preserved half-timbered village and along the vineyards to Unterstammheim.
Starting point: Stein am Rhein, train station, 414 m. Directions: S 8 (Schaffhausen–St. Gallen), S 29 (Winterthur–Stein a. R.), NFB 33 (Singen Htw.–Stein a. R.), NFB 825 (Frauenfeld–Stein a. R.). Parking is available in Wagenhausen or paid parking in Stein a. R. End point: Unterstammheim, Adler stop, 433 m, or Unterstammheim Station.
