The hike takes through an impressive, wild landscape of rocks and water, where the majestic peaks of the Mercantour rise nearby. The Autier Lake lies in a glacial basin, a preferred habitat for ibexes and chamois. In the Vésubie region, there are many mountain lakes—about twenty in total.
