The wild waters of Schluderns: High above Schluderns, in the Saldurbach gorge, two irrigation channels (Waale) are channeled: the Leitenwaal flows east through the Schludernser Leiten ridge, and the Bergwaal (or Berkwaal) flows west to the Vernalhof farm above Churburg Castle. The section of the path through the Saldur Gorge is therefore the most exciting part of this Waal hike. The Bergwaal, partly hewn into the rock, also features some quite adventurous sections, while the Leitenwaal, after leaving the rocky gorge, flows largely through shady forest and thus has a more leisurely character over longer stretches. Both Waal paths offer two special sights: on the Leitenwaal, the Ganglegg archaeological excavation site with prehistoric wall remains and an ancient water channel; and on the descent from the Bergwaal, Churburg Castle with its magnificent interior and large armory. In the Vintschger Museum in Schluderns, we can learn about the irrigation system of the Waale in the exhibition area "WasserWosser".
Starting point: Parking lot in Schluderns, 930 m. In Schluderns, follow the signs to the parking lot and irrigation channels (Waalwege) and drive along the Saldurbach stream on the right-hand side, heading into the valley to the paved parking lot. Transportation: Take the Vinschgau Railway to Schluderns station, then walk to the center of Schluderns to the parking lot mentioned above, approx.
