A scenic detour high above the Sarca Valley: This ascent from the Sarca Valley up to the hamlet of San Giovanni al Monte, with its inn, church, and a few houses, which can also be reached by car, entices hikers with its artfully constructed paths both on the way up and down. The view alone, overlooking the colorful landscape of the Sarca Valley with its vineyards, lakes, and scattered villages, is a delight. Forestry was practiced on the Coste dell'Anglone from 1913 to 1965. Those who hike here will wonder how the timber was transported down to the valley. But those who keep their eyes open will see the answer: it was a cable car that accomplished the transport. The access to this sloping plateau was originally built by the Austrian military: the "Sentiero degli Scaloni" (Cable Carriage Trail). However, the entire ascent requires not only good physical condition but also sure-footedness and a head for heights.
