On the Via Verde Varesina to the Cappella San Michele At the eastern end of the Monte della Colonna ridge, high above the intersection of the Valcuvia and Val Travaglia valleys, lies Monte San Martino. The Cappella San Martino in Culmine, built on the foundations of a 12th century Romanesque church and dedicated to the partisans who fell in battle here in November 1943, stands on the hilltop, one of the most beautiful vantage points over the Varesotto. Just below the chapel is a courtyard of honor picturesquely embedded in the rocks.
Starting point: Valley town / starting point: Laveno, 205 m.Parking lot below San Martino in Culmine (Navi N45.92874° E8.74899°). Approach from Laveno on the SS394 to Cittiglio, shortly after Cittiglio turn left into Valcuvia, in Cuveglio at the traffic lights turn left uphill on a narrow asphalt road to Duno.
