Rauhkofel, 3251 m
Proud rock pyramid in the Zillertal main ridge In contrast to the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Zillertal main ridge further to the west, the Rauhkofel (often incorrectly referred to as the Rauchkofel) can be climbed without climbing a glacier, making it an attractive (almost) hiking destination. The flat rock pyramid above the inner Ahrntal also offers a huge panorama, deep into North Tyrol, in the southwest as far as the glistening Adamello glaciers in the distance. But you have to earn this view; 1800 meters of ascent are no mean feat, and the southern ridge of the mountain has a few passages where you can"t get any further without using your hands.
Starting point: Prettau, 1476 m, in the inner Ahrntal, 24 km from Sand in Taufers. Bus connection to all villages in the valley.Requirements: A tour for fit, sure-footed mountain hikers. Easy climbing passages on the south ridge of the Rauhkofel.
A tour by:
Rother Wanderführer Tauferer Ahrntal (Eugen E. Hüsler)
