Pleisenspitze, 2569 m
A challenging day trip or a leisurely two-day tour: How about a spring tour to the Pleisenspitze? While it's a destination for the entire winter, January to March is ski touring season. The summit area is often groomed and the snow is rock hard. When the snow melts in spring along the trail to the Pleisenhütte, things become quieter around the summit and the hut. This is the most beautiful time for us on the Pleisen, even if we have to carry our snowshoes on our backpacks for part of the way. The cozy, rustic Pleisenhütte divides the ascent precisely in two. Anton Gaugg, the legendary Pleisen-Toni, built it single-handedly with immense willpower and strength and ran it for over 50 years. In the Vorderkarhöhle cave below the Pleisenspitze, this enthusiastic speleologist discovered an 8000-year-old elk skeleton. The fossil can be viewed at the Karwendel Information Center in Scharnitz. In 2007, Toni found his final resting place next to his beloved cabin, sheltered by a small chapel.
Starting point: Large parking lot on the eastern edge of Scharnitz at the entrance to the Hinterautal valley; smaller parking lot 1 km further into the Hinterautal valley at the end of the public road, approx. 970 m. Public transport: By train to Scharnitz station and then on foot in approx. 30 min.
