Tough one-day or leisurely two-day tourHow about a spring tour to the Pleisenspitze? Although it is a destination for the whole winter, January to March is ski touring season here. The summit area is then often groomed and the snow is rock-hard. When the snow on the way to the Pleisenhütte melts in spring, it becomes quieter around the summit and hut. This is the best time for us on the Pleisen, even if we have to carry our snowshoes on our rucksacks for a while. The cozy, rustic Pleisenhütte divides the ascent exactly in half. Anton Gaugg, the legendary Pleisen-Toni, built it all by himself with a lot of willpower and strength and managed it for over 50 years. The enthusiastic speleologist found an 8,000-year-old elk skeleton in the Vorderkar cave under the Pleisenspitze. The fossil can be viewed at the Karwendel Information Center in Scharnitz. In 2007, Toni found his final resting place next to his beloved hut, sheltered by a small chapel.
