Piz Sesvenna, 3204 m
Via the Sesvenna Hut to the highest peak of the group: Piz Sesvenna enjoys a good reputation among ski tourers, despite the short uphill section during the descent back to the Sesvenna Pass. This reputation is partly due to the popular stopover at the Sesvenna Hut, which allows less fit tourers to spread the ascent over two days. Another reason is certainly the generally good snow conditions on the Sesvenna Glacier, thanks to its north-facing aspect. While in summer one must choose one's route carefully to avoid crevasses, in winter, with good snow cover, the risk is manageable, so most ski tourers venture across the glacier basin unroped and enjoy the descent accordingly. Last but not least, the view from Sesvenna is magnificent. The Ötztal Alps and the Ortler Group are exceptionally clear, while the Bernina Group and the mountains on both sides of the Engadine Valley extend to the west and north.
Starting point: Schlinig car park, 1738 m, in the Schlinig Valley. Requirements: Equipment: Glacier equipment. The route follows an alpine road to the traverse at the Croda Nera/Schwarze Wand (Black Wall). The traverse is exposed but not very steep; fixed ropes are in place. From the Sesvenna Hut to the Sesvenna Glacier, the terrain is easy for skiing.
