On the "Success Levada" high above Funchal: The Ribeira de João Gomes valley above the metropolis of Funchal has made headlines several times in recent years. The path, which is quite steep in places and prone to landslides, has repeatedly led to serious hiking accidents. In August 2016, a forest fire also destroyed the previously jungle-like vegetation. The steeply descending path was subsequently restored and equipped with new safety features.
Starting point: Largo do Fonte in Monte, 550 m. From Funchal, take city bus 20 or 21 (both from Praça da Autonomia) to the Monte terminus. A quick (15 min) and scenic cable car ride from Avenida do Mar in Funchal (daily 10 am–18 pm) takes you to Monte.
