A View Towards South Tyrol: From the Gurgler Valley, two possible ice-free passes lead to the South Tyrolean side of the main ridge: the Apere Ferwalljoch and the Königsjoch. They are not particularly important for tourism, although, curiously, the Apere Ferwalljoch will remain in the author's memory as the point where he first set foot on South Tyrolean soil (during an extensive trek while crossing into the Seebertal). Such a crossing is rarely undertaken nowadays, but even just glancing across the border as part of a quiet mountain experience is certainly worthwhile.
Starting point: Hochgurgl, 2154 m, hotel complex on the Timmelsjoch road (shortly before the toll booth). End point: Obergurgl, 1907 m. Bus connection back to Hochgurgl. Requirements: T2–3.
