Hochkünzelspitze, 2397 m
A proud rocky throne above the remote Bregenzer Ach valley, the Hochkünzelspitze, known locally as Hohe Künzel, has been a popular climbing mountain for decades. According to the Vorarlberg alpine writer Walther Flaig, the name Künzel derives from the quite fitting term "pulpit." Viewed from the Allgäu mountains, this striking main dolomite trapezoid is one of the most prominent features. The diverse, high-alpine surroundings of the Biberacher Hütte stand in stark contrast to the gently rolling green of the pastures around this welcoming Alpine Club hut. Before spending the night, one can enjoy a breathtaking sunset from the nearby Schnabel viewpoint.
Starting point: Guideboden, bus stop at the church (Sonntag parish), 910 m; parking area. Requirements: Well-marked trails, with secured sections from the Biberacher Hütte onwards, initially a forest road. Long, steep ascent. Only for experienced hikers; sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential. Take care in wet conditions!
