Heukuppe, 2007 m
Steep ascent from the Moassa Inn through the Raxenmäuer gorge. As the highest peak of the Rax range, the Heukuppe has many devoted admirers thanks to its expansive, sunny meadows. Most of them approach it from the Preiner Gscheid pass via the well-known Schlangenweg (Snake Path). The Moassa Inn, situated somewhat off the beaten track above the idyllic Altenberg Valley, is chosen as a starting point far less frequently, even though it is the highest possible. The secured Reißtalersteig trail surprisingly easily overcomes the barrier of the Raxenmäuer gorge and opens up the magnificent meadows surrounding the summit of the Heukuppe, which offers a panoramic view.
Starting point: Moassa mountain inn, 1160 m, parking available. Toll-free access from Kapellen through the Kohlbachgraben, 5 km from the Preiner-Gscheid road. Taxi from Mürzzuschlag (see p. 16). Requirements: Via ferrata experience is necessary on the Reißtalersteig trail (difficulty A/B), which is secured with wire ropes and ladders.
