A massive rock pillar above the Tribulaun Hut. The mountains of the Tribulaun group, with their distinctly Dolomite-like appearance and geologically closely related to the true Dolomites, exude an irresistible charisma. Naturally, one anticipates considerable challenges when confronted with these colossal rock masses, but in the case of the Gschnitzer Tribulaun, these challenges are not overly demanding and certainly warrant inclusion in a guidebook. The usual approach leads via the charming Tribulaun Hut into the Schneetal valley and then up the eastern side via a steep ridge and the scree slopes near the summit. Given the difficulty and some sections of loose rock, the overall difficulty justifies the "black" rating – but any capable mountain hiker can certainly attempt this route. The reward is a fantastic, high-alpine panorama right on the border between North and South Tyrol.
Starting point: Gasthof Feuerstein, 1281 m, at the end of the road into the Gschnitz valley. Paid parking lot and bus stop. Requirements: Almost T4. Scree and rock trail with some fixed ropes (crux in a gully), often loose and arduous in the scree field below the Schneetalscharte. Do not attempt too early in the year due to treacherous snowfields!
