About the Hindenburg Hut: This fascinating mountain is one of the most beautiful panoramic peaks in the Chiemgau Alps. Whether looking towards the Bavarian Prealps or the Hohe Tauern, the Berchtesgaden Alps or the Kaiser Mountains – on clear days, the views are breathtaking. However, it is not the easiest mountain to reach: the route is long, the summit can be tricky and prone to avalanches, and huge cornices often form on the eastern side of the summit ridge. An old wayside shrine commemorates a tragic accident caused by a cornice collapse. If you have to forgo the summit, the Straubinger Haus is a lovely alternative. Unfortunately, this impressive hut is closed in winter, but sheltered benches along the wall invite you to take a relaxing break, and the view of the Wilder Kaiser is quite comparable to that from the summit. Please do not ascend or descend via the access road to the Straubinger Haus; it leads through a forest and wildlife conservation area and should not be entered in winter.
Starting point: Seegatterl on the road between Reit im Winkl and Ruhpolding, parking spaces at the valley station of the gondola lift to the Winklmoos Alm ski area, keep right at the parking lot entrance and over the bridge to the large rear parking lot, 760 m.
