This stage leads us from Mauthausen on the Danube through the cultivated plains of the Machland region and across the panoramic hills of the Mühlviertel to Perg on the northern edge of the Machland. Along the way, we discover the granite art of Mauthausen, the salt road to Bohemia, the secrets of porcelain production, the millstone quarries of Perg, and much more. Description: The starting point for this Danube Trail stage is Mauthausen. Here, the Mühlviertel hills drop steeply to the Danube. The historic market town lies directly on the Danube opposite the confluence with the Enns River. The magnificent riverfront and the charming town center bear witness to a prosperous past thanks to tolls, salt, and granite.
