Die Halbinsel São Lourenço
Spectacular rocky coastline at the easternmost tip of the islandWhen approaching Madeira, the peninsula located in the flight path gives an impression that doesn"t really fit the cliché of the evergreen flower island. After rainy winters, the peninsula is covered in green grass that stretches out into the sea like a finger, but in summer it is extremely dry, except for the undemanding midday flowers. Nevertheless, the wild and romantic rocky coast makes the hike a very popular and highly frequented island tour - in high season, 1000 to 1500 hikers are on the trail every day! If you want to take it easy, at least on the way there, you should finish your hotel breakfast quickly and be at the large parking lot at the starting point of the tour by 9 a.m. at the latest.
Starting point: Baía d"Abra, 77 m. From Machico, take the VR 1 to the end of the highway at the free trade port (Zona Franca) of Caniçal; from there, follow the signs to Ponta São Lourenço until the road ends after 5 km at the parking lot above the Baía d"Abra. Take bus 113 to Baía d"Abra.Requirements: Easy hike on sometimes rocky paths, exposed sections are secured.
