Nestled in the rocky cirque of the Mieming Mountains, the Coburg Hut above the Drachensee (Dragon Lake) stands at the heart of the rugged Mieming Mountains' dramatic rocky landscape. It's the magnificent close-up views that captivate us on this tour, as the Zugspitze, to the north, completes the panorama of towering cliffs. In the depths of winter, the hut (which is closed) is shady and often bitterly cold. Only in spring, when the sun rises over the Griesspitzen peaks and warms the benches against the hut's wall, is it the most beautiful time for our tour. The high starting point at the Ehrwalder Alm and the north-facing slopes below the hut guarantee good snow conditions well into April. The Ehrwalder Alm is connected to Leutasch via the Gaistal valley, where Ludwig Ganghofer held hunting rights for many years.
Starting point: Valley town / Starting point: Ehrwald, large parking lot at the valley station of the Ehrwalder Almbahn cable car, 1108 m. Take the cable car to the mountain station of the Ehrwalder Almbahn cable car, 1502 m. Operating hours mid-Dec.
