Outdoor adventures in hidden, fertile erosion valleys The village of Chã de Morte is surrounded by the towering rock walls of a huge caldera that rise up to 1000 m high. Only the south-west facing crater wall has collapsed towards the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to this natural phenomenon, Chã de Morte can be reached by vehicle. Erosion valleys have also formed over the millennia, with small and remote oases and terraced fields, to which we will hike on a spectacular trail. Another attraction are the so-called dykes, the American term for fissure fillings, which are formed by an active volcano. These are exposed by a long erosion process, leaving up to 40 m high and up to 1 m wide, free-standing rock faces. No less exciting is the descent through a gorge up to 5 m wide with steep rock faces.
