Peninsula with noblesse on Lake LucerneThe Bürgenstock is somehow a trademark of Lake Lucerne. Although comparatively modest in height, the peninsula-like mountain ridge is strikingly visible and even has a respectable drop-off on the lake side, while the southern flank gently slopes away with a mosaic of forests and meadows. A tourist infrastructure was established on the Bürgenstock as early as the 19th century. Sophisticated hotels were built, as well as a mountain railroad connecting to the Kehrsiten landing stage, creating a veritable upmarket health resort on the western foothills. The Hammetschwand lift, still the highest open-air elevator in Europe today, caused a sensation as a link between the spectacular rocky path and the summit area. Its construction was a masterpiece of engineering at the time. The hiking options on the Bürgenstock are varied, even if they are never particularly extensive tours. An invitation for connoisseurs!
