To the Steinriegel, 1577 m
From the valley via the mining trail to the alpine pasture. The name Ratten derives from the Middle High German word "Roten," originally meaning new land or newly settled area. The area along the upper Feistritz River was settled around 1200 and was predominantly agricultural for centuries. Large-scale brown coal mining, primarily open-pit mining, began in 1920. The information panels along the mining trail offer a glimpse into the industrial development of the Ratten area. For further information, a visit to the "Peace Tunnel," closed in 1960, is worthwhile. It has been converted into a show mine and now houses the mining museum. During the hike, near the Dirndlhof farm, we encounter another themed trail, the Moon Trail, designed by the Ratten artist Alois Tösch. Apart from the thematic content along the way, the route itself is very varied, as you hike from the valley to the alpine pasture and thus get to know different natural and cultural landscapes.
Starting point: Ratten, 765 m, parking available in the village. Directions: Take the S 6 to the Langenwang exit, then follow the B 72 via Alpl to Ratten.
