A tranquil stream hike in the border region: The walk through the Aschau Gorge is varied and is one of the tours in the Berchtesgaden region that are definitely not overcrowded, as it lies somewhat off the beaten tourist track. In the past, when the saltworks in Bad Reichenhall still required large quantities of wood for boiling, the Aschau stream was dammed and the felled timber floated down to the Saalach River. A feat that is hardly imaginable today.
Starting point: Church square in Schneizlreuth, 511 m, central location in the Saalach valley basin, scattered settlement with a characteristic church (parking available there); also accessible by Oberbayernbus, stop "Rennerparkplatz" (from there turn left down to the Saalach bridge). Requirements: Hiking trails and paths.
