Arpelistock, 3035 m
Ascent via a unique erosion ridge to a magnificent panoramic summit between Bern and Valais. The tour to the Arpelistock feels like walking in another world: We traverse the Arête de l'Arpille (Arpeli Ridge) almost entirely along its edge, traversing several ledges. Steep, dark scree slopes, crisscrossed by deep gullies, flank us on either side, covered only in a few areas with sparse vegetation. Even if you think you'll reach the top quickly, you still have to climb over 400 meters before the actual summit trail begins and you enter a completely different zone dominated by light-colored limestone scree. As expected, the ridge offers unobstructed views, and the Diablerets massif opposite is particularly striking, with the Tsanfleuron Glacier at the top and a bright karst plateau extending below almost to the Sanetsch Pass – what contrasts in such a relatively small area! The final ascent to the summit of the Arpelistock demands absolute sure-footedness in the steep and scree-covered rocky area – although not very high, it allows for no mistakes. If in doubt, it's better to consider the notch just below the highest point, which also offers impressive views, as the summit!
Starting point: Sanetsch Pass (Col du Sanetsch or Col de Sénin, 2253 m).
