Bird Island and Love Nest: This hiking suggestion includes a well-known and a hidden highlight. The well-known one is Bird Island, created to provide a safe breeding and living space for waterfowl on the newly formed reservoir. The island's viewing platform has become a popular spot for birdwatchers who come with their cameras to observe the activity on the water. Less well-known is the village of Wald, now part of Gunzenhausen. Here, in 1749, the Wild Margrave of Ansbach acquired a hunting lodge that also served as his love nest.
Starting point: Muhr am See train station, 419 m. From Nuremberg Central Station, take the S4 to Ansbach, then the regional train (RB) towards Treuchtlingen to Muhr am See. Alternatively, take the regional express (RE) to Treuchtlingen, then the regional train (RB) towards Würzburg to Muhr am See. Parking is available at the train station (GPS: 91735 Muhr am See, Bahnhofstraße). End point: Gunzenhausen train station, 416 m.
