No pain, no gain!Schober, Drachenwand and Almkogel are the northernmost peaks in the Höllkar group, the small mountain range between Lake Fuschl, Lake Mondsee and Lake Wolfgangsee. While the ascent of the Drachenwand ("Drachenwand, 1060 m" tour) and the Schober ("Schober, 1328 m" tour) is reserved for good mountaineers, the Almkogel, which is honored here, is definitely accessible to hikers. Nevertheless, the route through the steep northern flank of the Almkogel is quite arduous, so that some may wonder whether it is really worth the effort. But you will be pleasantly surprised, as the summit - a rocky peak rising out of the forest - proves to be a phenomenal lodge opposite Schafberg and Drachenwand above the reflecting waters of Lake Mondsee.
Starting point: Ghf. Drachenwand, 490 m (parking lot), in the village of St. Lorenz/Bachlehen, which belongs to the municipality of Mondsee, with bus stop, 5.5 km from Mondsee-Markt.Requirements: Strenuous but not difficult steep ascent. Sure-footedness required!Refreshments: Ghf. Drachenwand and Ghf.
