3D map made from aerial photographs
The realistic depiction of the mountain landscape is unique! We calculate the 3D map using innovative technology from aerial and satellite images. The resolution of the aerial images is 25 cm, the elevation model has a resolution of 1 meter.
Currently, the 3D map covers the Alps, the Pyrenees, and many other mountain regions and islands in Europe. The map is constantly being expanded.
We calculate the worldwide 3D map based on satellite images from the European Space Agency (ESA). The satellite images have a resolution of 10 m, while the elevation model has a resolution of 5–30 m depending on the region.
For the Alps, we have also developed an additional [feature/solution] for selected regions. 3D map based on winter aerial photographs calculated. Currently available are the Zugspitze region, Berchtesgaden, Allgäu, Vorarlberg, Kitzbühel Alps, Ötztal Alps, the Ski Amadé ski area in Salzburg and Styria, the Dolomites in South Tyrol and the Engadine in Switzerland.
Topographic relief map
RealityMaps uses data from OpenStreetMap to calculate a topographic map with unique 3D relief shadingWe use the elevation model from the aerial photograph for shading. The topographic map is available worldwide. This gives the map a three-dimensional impression, which significantly facilitates orientation on the go.
We have a plan for the winter 3D map based on the elevation model and calculated using OpenStreetMap data. This allows you to optimally assess the terrain when freeriding and ski touring in winter.
The 3D map for winter currently covers the Alps and the Pyrenees.
slope
We calculated the slope based on a high-precision surface model with a 1-meter resolution. The terrain's inclination (>20° – 90°) is indicated by different colors, ranging from green (20-25°) through yellow (25-30°) to orange/red (35-50°) and dark red (>50°). Flat areas with an incline of less than 20 degrees are displayed transparently.
The slope gradient can be displayed as an additional layer in the 3D map (summer or winter). This allows for a better assessment of the terrain's steepness and, in winter, the avalanche risk.
Slope orientation
We calculated the slope orientation based on a high-precision surface model with a 1-meter resolution. The slope orientation is displayed as a color-coded representation of the orientation of mountain slopes. The terrain's orientation (0° – 360°) is indicated by different colors, ranging from green (north) through blue (east) and magenta (south) to orange (west). Flat areas with a gradient of less than 20 degrees are shown transparently.
The slope orientation can be displayed as an additional layer in the 3D map (summer or winter). This allows for a better assessment of, for example, the terrain's sun exposure.
Road and path network
The "Hiking & Biking Routes" map layer shows designated routes worldwide. This layer makes it easy to distinguish between hiking trails, paths, singletracks, and paved roads on the 3D map.
The road network can be displayed as an additional layer in the 3D map (summer or winter).
Weather
A weather and snow report is a key added value for tour planning on 3D maps because it links static terrain information (steepness, aspect, altitude, route) with dynamic conditions. This transforms "where can I go?" into "where is it sensible and safe to go in the next 72 hours?".
With MetGIS weather and snow maps directly on the 3D map, you can plan more precisely, quickly, and safely: You can see not only the route of your planned tour, but also the likely weather conditions along the route – allowing you to make informed adjustments to your activity, equipment, and schedule.
Cloud cover simulation
This feature allows you to interactively define the upper cloud limit on the 3D map. The 3D view shows you at a glance at what altitude the cloud cover begins to dissipate. You can immediately see whether peaks, ridges, or high plateaus are likely to be sunny, while valleys are still shrouded in fog or high fog.
The display of the upper cloud boundary on the 3D map offers a crucial informational advantage for tour planning in the mountains, as it makes visibility and weather conditions understandable in terms of both location and altitude. This information is particularly relevant in alpine terrain, where just a few hundred meters of elevation can determine whether there is sunshine or fog. You can then decide precisely which tour destination or ascent is suitable given the current weather conditions.
3D visualization reduces the risk of making incorrect decisions based on general weather reports. Instead of abstract information ("high fog up to 2.200 m"), you can see precisely which parts of your planned tour are affected.
Summer - Winter Splitscreen
A direct comparison on the 3D map between snow-free summer terrain and a snow-covered winter landscape is particularly helpful for better assessing terrain features and hazards: Rock bands, gullies, avalanche gullies, or avalanche grass, which are hidden under snow in winter, are visible in the summer aerial image and can be precisely compared with the winter situation. This gives you a deep understanding of the topography and allows you to better evaluate critical areas.
Especially when planning tours, this function allows for a sound assessment of key points and possible alternative routes. At the same time, it helps users identify features in snowy terrain while on the go. The seamless switching between seasons makes the map a powerful tool for anyone who wants to travel safely and with foresight in alpine terrain, even in winter.
Webcams
Over 1.500 webcams, precisely located on the 3D map, offer immediate and practical added value for your tour planning. The webcams provide real-time impressions of the terrain, showing the actual conditions on site: cloud cover, visibility, snow conditions, wind drift, or bare ground. This allows you to instantly compare weather forecasts with reality and avoid planning errors.
In winter, webcams provide important information about snow depth, snow cover continuity, track conditions, and snow consistency. This is particularly helpful for ski and snowshoe tours when deciding on a route and start time.
Ski resorts with mountain railways and slopes
The winter map includes over 500 ski resorts in the Alps and Pyrenees. All slopes, lifts, and cable cars are shown with precise location. This allows you to explore new ski areas or record your runs using GPS tracking.
Tours reviewed by experts
The app and tour planner offer over 30.000 meticulously researched hiking, mountaineering, and mountain biking tours from Rother Bergverlag and other partners. The tour descriptions, including route information on a 3D map, provide all the essential details regarding difficulty, starting point, elevation profile, and places to stop for refreshments along the way.
The "Pro Tours" are displayed on the 3D map as icons for various activities. Tours can be sorted and filtered by criteria such as activity, duration, length, or difficulty using filters.
Record tours with GPS
With the tracking function, you can record your route and statistics using your smartphone's GPS. If you have a compatible heart rate monitor, you can simultaneously track your fitness data. While you're out, important information such as distance traveled, elevation gain, current speed, and time spent moving is displayed in real time. You can take photos with the app during your tour. These photos will then be displayed at their correct locations on the 3D map. You can also add photos from your gallery to a tour afterward. If, for example, you forgot to turn off GPS at the end of your tour, you can edit the track (shorten the route). After your tour, you can name the track and define the activity.
Import tours
With the "Import Tour" function, you can expand your tour selection with thousands of tours from the internet. Download tours in GPX format from other tour portals or tourist destination websites and import them into the app or tour planner with a single click. If you have a Komoot user account, you can link it to the RealityMaps app. This allows you to import tours planned or recorded with Komoot into the RealityMaps app.
Planned, recorded, imported, or shared tours are automatically added to your tour list. No matter which device you use to expand your tour list, your tours remain synchronized everywhere thanks to your RealityMaps account.
Share tours
Sharing self-recorded tours directly from the app simplifies coordination and makes planning joint tours significantly easier. All participants have the same information – even before the tour starts the next day.
Complete information instead of just a line: Not only the track is shared, but also statistics such as length, elevation gain, duration, and photos saved with the track. This makes it easier to realistically assess the difficulty, time required, and overall experience.
The tour can be sent directly to friends and acquaintances via WhatsApp or email – without detours or additional platforms. Alternatively, the tour can be shared as a GPX file and imported into other apps, GPS devices, or navigation systems. This makes planning independent of the device used or preferred software.
Create favorites
Marking tours as favorites makes tour planning clear and usable in the long term. Tours marked as favorites are saved in a separate list. This allows you to access planned, recommended, or particularly interesting tours again at any time with just a few clicks – even long after the initial planning.
Optimal planning of multi-day mountain tours: For a multi-day mountain holiday, you can combine several planned tours and review them together. This will show which tours build sensibly upon each other.
The favorites function combines planning and remembrance: it not only helps you prepare for a mountain holiday, but also makes your past experiences visible. This turns the app and the tour planner into a personal tour archive – ideal for anyone who regularly hikes in the mountains and wants to plan and track their tours effectively.
Save your own tours
The automatic addition of all tours to the personal tour list makes the app a central, reliable tool for planning, execution, and review. Whether tours are planned, recorded, imported, or shared with others – everything is clearly collected in one place.
Always up-to-date across all devices: your tour list stays automatically synchronized via your RealityMaps user account – regardless of whether tours are added on your smartphone, tablet, or desktop. All changes are immediately available on all devices.
Self-recorded tours become your personal documentation of your experiences in the mountains. Length, elevation gain, time, and route record where you were – supplemented by your own descriptions and photos.
Offline maps
You can use the RealityMaps app on the go, even without a mobile signal or in airplane mode. To do this, download the relevant region you'll be traveling in from the "Offline Maps" menu. The 3D map will then be installed on your smartphone in a slightly reduced resolution. For optimal results, use the "Offline Map" feature with a mobile network connection: when there's no signal, the offline map will be displayed. As soon as a connection is re-established, the maximum quality will be displayed again. You can save any section of the topographic map to your smartphone. You can delete the maps at any time to free up storage space and reinstall them as needed.
Features in the tour planner
Plan tours on the 3D map
With the routing function, you can plan a custom tour directly on the 3D map. Simply define your start and end points. A route between these points will be automatically calculated using OpenStreetMap data. You can optimize the route by adding waypoints. By moving or swapping points in the point list, you can change the route and their order. You can also specify the terrain features to be considered in the route calculation. Statistics will show you the distance, elevation gain, estimated time, and elevation profile of your planned route. If you want to plan a tour off the beaten track, you can digitize the route yourself in "Free Plan" mode. Planned tours are automatically synchronized with the app!
Edit tour information
Edit your tour information: Change the title, add a short description and a detailed description. You can also change your tour's activity and add or delete photos. Save a screenshot from the 3D map directly in the tour planner as a photo of the tour. You can also set the tour's cover image.
Measuring in the 3D map
This tool allows you to measure distances and elevation differences directly on the 3D map. The measurement tool in the route planner has two functions: 1. Elevation measurement provides the elevation difference and the straight-line distance between two points. 2. Distance measurement allows you to set more than two points and provides the total length of the route. Placed points can be moved freely on the map.
